Standing Strong for Youth and Vermont

For four decades, the Vermont Youth Conservation Corps has empowered over 7,000 young people through meaningful service experiences that build strong leadership skills tackling Vermont’s most pressing challenges. VYCC’s core programs — Conservation and Food & Farm — follow a small-team, high-impact model. Our crews maintain hundreds of miles of trails, restore vital habitats, grow over 70,000 pounds of organic food each year for families facing food insecurity, and help cultivate the next generation of Vermont’s conservation leaders, farmers, educators, and skilled tradespeople.

On Friday, April 25th, service-driven organizations like VYCC were impacted by the sudden cancellation of 1,000 federal AmeriCorps grants—eliminating $400 million in funding nationwide. VYCC has run programs in partnership with AmeriCorps since 1993, and the abrupt termination of our $517,000 grant directly impacts revenues that fund approximately 80 positions.

As we face this loss of AmeriCorps funding, we’re calling on our community to take action.

VYCC remains dedicated to taking action and serving others, even as it faces the challenges of these funding cuts. We are actively identifying efficiencies, reducing costs, and pursuing new revenue streams to ensure our operations remain both responsible and sustainable. We will find a way to continue to provide paid service experiences to dedicated incoming participants.

By contributing today, you invest directly in Vermont’s future and in the young people gaining the skills, experience, and purpose to lead. The spirit of service that defines our state is resilient—and now is the time to strengthen it by making these transformative opportunities more accessible than ever.

“VYCC is an environment where I realize that I am capable of driving a tractor, and I am capable of growing plants from seed, and I am capable of working in a leadership role at another farm. What excites me most is the chance to pass that on: to teach other young people how to farm. VYCC is a deeply empowering place where people form meaningful connections with the land and each other, and I’m thrilled to help create that experience for others this season.”
