How To Pay for a Crew

Cost Share Opportunities

The VYCC accomplishes its mission of teaching personal responsibility through the completion of important, educationally-rich conservation projects. The VYCC receives funding from federal, state, and local governments or organizations and through a variety of fundraising efforts by our Development staff. These grants and gifts help to cover some of the operating costs of our crews. We ask Project Sponsors to cover the balance of the costs in return for the work accomplished. Often the VYCC will partner with project sponsors to apply for a variety of grants which can cover the balance of these costs which typically range from $5,500 to $7,000 per week depending on the type of crew.

Vermont Agency of Transportation Enhancement Projects

The VYCC partners with the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) to complete transportation enhancement projects throughout the state. The focus of these projects should be to encourage diverse modes of travel, foster local economic development, and bring direct benefits to communities from transportation spending.

Project Sponsors with work projects which meet specific transportation enhancement criteria may receive completely-funded VYCC crew time to complete their projects. In addition, there is the possibility of receiving a grant to reimburse material costs incurred in the completion of the work project.

To apply complete the Project Application and check the box marked Transportation Enhancement on the Work Project Proposal form if you think your project is eligible. Your project will be reviewed by the VYCC and VTrans to determine final eligibility.

To be eligible, projects must meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Provision of safety and educational activities for pedestrians and bicyclists
  • Provision of facilities for pedestrians and bicycles
  • Acquisition of scenic easements and scenic or historic sites
  • Environmental mitigation to address pollution due to the effects of highway runoff or reduce vehicle-caused wildlife mortality
  • Scenic or historic highway projects
  • Landscaping or other scenic beautification
  • Historic preservation
  • Establishment of transportation museums
  • Rehabilitation and operation of historic transportation buildings or facilities
  • Preservation of abandoned railway corridors
  • Archaeological planning and research
  • Control and removal of outdoor advertising

Other Grants Available

There are a variety of other funding sources available to help cover the costs of hiring a VYCC crew to complete your project. Please call our office if you have any questions or are including the VYCC as a partner in any grant applications.
