FAQ - How to Hire a Crew
Q: Are you insured?
A: Yes. We carry full coverage on all our crews including workers compensation, medical and liability.
Q: How old are the members in your work crews?
A: The age ranges from 16 years to 24 years.
Q: How technical is the work you do?
A: This depends on you and your project. The more technical the project the more lead time we require in order to recruit a team with the necessary skills.
Q: Is there a waiting list for your crews?
A: Most crew time is booked 12 to 18 months in advance, though we keep a number of open slots for communities and other sponsors.
Q: Is your work guaranteed?
A: You bet it is. We promise to complete the project on time or ahead of schedule to the agreed to standards we set up in advance with you, the sponsor.
Q: Is it expensive to hire a VYCC crew?
A: No. It is not. An average crew consists of ten Corps members and two leaders. The fee we charge generally equals the amount of wages we pay. The VYCC is an extraordinary value.
Q: Can you do work on privately owned land?
A: No. We have decided to only complete work on pubic lands, waters or buildings or on projects that have a clear value to the local community. As a not-for-profit organization, we depend on donations. We do not feel it would be right to use these donations to improve the value of any private individual or group.
Q: How do I decide which type of crew is the best fit for my project?
A: We'll help you answer this question taking into account the location and size of the project. For example, if the project is close to one of our Community Crew Bases, it may be best completed by a Community Crew. If it is 4 weeks of work and not easily accessible, it might be a great project for a Wilderness Crew. If it is smaller in scope and not near a Crew Base, the Roving Crew may be the best option. We'll discuss with you the different options.
Q: How do I determine how long it will take to complete my project?
A: A VYCC staff person can schedule a field visit to see your project and to discuss details with you. We will help you identify how long your project would take to complete based on the location and nature of the project.
Q: What if I need help with the design of my project?
A: If you have an idea in mind but are looking for design feedback or technical assistance, we can help. Additional services we can provide include (but are not limited to): trail and structure design, project cost analysis and materials lists, mapping, boundary location, and much more!
