Catamount Trail Association
Map and Graphic Design Intern
Summer 2008
During the summer of 2008, CTA is seeking a Map and Graphic Design Intern to create a variety of trail maps and other printed materials, deliver maps to trail register boxes along the trail, and repair the trail register boxes. The intern will work mostly in the CTA office in Burlington but will spend approximately two weeks toward the end of the summer out on the Trail. The intern must have access to a reliable car.
Internship duration: 7 weeks
Start date: early June (flexible)
End date: early August (flexible)
Pay Scale: $9/hr.
Supervisor: CTA Trail Manager
Location: Burlington and various locations along the Trail
Needed skills: proficiency with ArcGIS and graphic design software; proficiency with basic hand tools (hammer, pliers, screwdriver, saw, etc.).
The intern must be reliable and responsible, creative and resourceful. We need an individual who is organized and pays great attention to detail but can also problem solve and take initiative when the situation calls for it. This internship will be most meaningful to students who have done backcountry hiking or skiing and understand the map needs of trail users. The intern will gain insight into the rewards and challenges of managing a public recreational resource and working for a non-profit organization.
The Catamount Trail Association is a member-supported, non-profit organization that manages and promotes the Catamount Trail, Vermont’s 300-mile long backcountry ski trail. Designed for winter, non-motorized use only, the CT runs from Readsboro, on the Massachusetts border, to Jay, on the Quebec border, traversing mountains, forests, fields, and villages along the way. Seed Production Farm Internships
We are always accepting applications for our production farm internships. This work involves all aspects of production from greenhouse planting, to transplanting, cultivation, seed collection, and seed cleaning. Most interns like to come in the fall when the majority of seed is being harvested, but we will take interns who want to have a general farm experience throughout the summer.
Trial Garden Internships
Data Collection Intern: We are looking for two or three interns to visit the farm a couple days a week to collect data in our variety research garden. This will involve recording data for hundreds of varieties including vegetable characteristics, weight, measurements, taste testing etc. This is a perfect position for someone who can pay attention to details and enjoys getting to know a wide array of vegetable crop types.
Pollination Intern: We are looking for one or two interns who want to learn the basics of plant breeding and manage our six week window of pollinations starting in mid July through August. This position may need to people as pollinations need to happen every day. We focus on cucurbits and have a number of projects including summer squash, winter squash, pumpkins, melons and tomatoes.
General Trial Gardens Field Intern: Come and learn how to grow over twenty types of vegetables in one summer, including flowers and herbs. We have a number of part time intern positions for those who want to get their hands in the dirt. As an intern you will be an integral part of the farm crew but also participate in field walks and off-site farm visits. A great way to have fun and learn a lot of info in a short amount of time!

High Mowing Organic Seeds is an independently owned seed company that specializes in 100% certified organic seed. They grow an average of 30% of there bulk seed on our farm in Wolcott, VT. They are always looking for people who are interested in learning new skills. They do not offer housing but do have on-site camping and have a full kitchen and library that are accessible at all times. These positions can be used for college or high school internship credits but this is not necessary for consideration. They recommend that these be part time positions, but would consider a full time internship for the right person. All interns receive a $25-50/week stipend (depending on whether internship is part-time or full-time), access to organic veggies throughout the season, and access to free seeds and reduced cost books and growing supplies.

Spring 2008
Henderson's Tree Service, LLC is building its team this spring. This could be your opportunity for employment and significant training in the field of arboriculture, landscape and garden care.
Since 1985 we have cared for trees throughout Vermont’s Upper Valley (emphasizing safety first) as well as provided regular community planting demonstrations. In 2002 we added landscape and garden care to our service line.
This spring up to five individuals will be recruited, trained, and hired into new jobs. The following is a description of the training programs and the process for applying for this unique opportunity.
Application Process
Henderson Tree Service has partnered with the Vermont Youth Conservation Corps to recruit and train new staff.
Applicants will be screened and selected to participate in a one-day Orientation and Interview session on April 30. Up to five people will be selected to begin work as “Employees in Training” in mid June once the school year is over. A series of evaluations and on-the-job training during the first eight weeks of employment will lead to full time positions for qualified Employees in Training.
Employees in Training will start at a pay level compatible with their experience; base pay for new employees is $11-$13 per hour.
Applicants must be available full time after graduation, be professionally driven, desire additional training, have a positive attitude, be self respecting, healthy, hardworking, willing to re-locate to the White River Junction area, and have reliable transportation.
