Green Mountain Internships

Richmond Community Crew
Connecting young adults to Vermont’s Economic Future

Green Mountain Internships (GMI) seeks to connect Vermont Students with engaging, exciting, and innovative opportunities that build leadership, technical, and professional skills with the Vermont green business community.

GMI places students with Green technology, socially responsible, and environmentally aware organizations across Vermont. We make matches through our extensive network of Green organizations, schools, technical centers, community based programs, alumni, and existing VYCC programs. Internships lengths vary depending on the placement and can be customized to fit both the employer and participant needs.

Many internship opportunities happen directly with the VYCC. Every year VYCC hires over 200 youth annually to work on Conservation Program Crews, and works with GMI to help employ participants who are interested in earning academic credit through an internship experience. Below is a list of schools that have participated:

Mill River BFA
Springfield Northlands
Fair Haven Green Mountain College
University of Vermont Sterling
Twinfield Mount Mansfield
Lamoille

GMI also works with the VYCC School Program to provide over 100 students annually an internship based on a hands-on learning experience during the year with the opportunity for summer employment on a VYCC Crew or with a partner organization. Below is a list of the schools currently running School Crews:

A Green Mountain Internship is characterized by having participants engage in a customized work-based learning experience which builds upon areas of study and individual interest, and is built upon the following principles:

  • Focus on placing student interns in new and emerging Green organizations, technology fields and in traditional trades where green initiatives are being applied.
  • Demonstrates on the part of the intern and employer, a commitment to sustainability, waste reduction, and energy conservation.
  • Incorporates credit earning opportunities for the student through an in-depth green work force experience.
  • Create real workplace expectations and consequences, and provide a process that measures progress toward mastery of skills, positive attitude, behavior, and sense of responsibility.

GMI staff develops and monitors placements ensuring that educational and workplace performance criteria are met, working with both host and student to answer questions, facilitate evaluation, and assure the highest possible quality.
