The VYCC is comprised of a myriad of programs which all lend themselves to the organizational mission of teaching individuals to take personal responsibility for all of their actions.

Since its inception in 1985, VYCC has continually developed programs that provide a spectrum of opportunities for youth to enrich leadership, education, and work skills. VYCC uses conservation work as the vehicle for meeting those goals.

Regardless of the crew type, the recipe for a successful VYCC experience is generally the same: We hire small diverse groups of young people to work on high-priority, meaningful conservation projects with professional adult leaders. High expectations, hard work, and crew-oriented activities rich with educational experiences draw youth from a variety of backgrounds together to live, work, and recreate as a tight-knit community. Young people that may not normally spend time together form strong bonds, understand new perspectives, and learn from each other as much as they learn from adult mentors they work alongside.

Crew experiences run the gamut from non-residential positions working on projects in home communities to residential experiences immersed in Vermont's backcountry. Each program is designed to meet crew members in their comfort zone and encourage them to step beyond that with support and leadership from highly-trained leaders and staff.
